There is a song by The Casting Crowns called “Slow Fade.” It talks about how life doesn’t crumble in a day and how we need to be careful of whom and what we listen to.
Lying or listening to lies may not seem like a big deal. We justify the white ones; close our eyes to the big ones. We keep moving forward and the lines between right and wrong, and what’s true and false become blurry. We adjust our eyes accordingly.
Have lies become our truth?
Culture of Lies
“Never knew truth could be so hard to find. World makes it easier believing in lies…” That is a line from a song my sister and I wrote called “Hold On.”
We live in a world that constantly screams, “You’re not rich enough, pretty enough, or thin enough.” Billboards, magazines, the media, even our “friends” tell us that “we’re not the right color, we’re too young, we’re too old, it’s too late.” The Bible says that we are not to be conformed to the world, but transformed by the renewing of our mind. (Romans 12:2)
The greatest protection against lies is the truth. Know what God says about you. You are the apple of His eye. He created you on purpose, with a plan. Believe it!
Denial Island
When parents “can’t see” their child is in trouble, when we refuse to acknowledge that we made a mistake, that a “bad habit” is actually an addiction, when we close our eyes to stale relationships, talk ourselves into settling, or tell ourselves it doesn’t matter how far we go into debt, it’s like building a sand castle. No matter how beautiful it may look, eventually the waves carry it away. And you never know when the storm is going to hit.
City of Deception
When we think of a lie, we think of something that intentionally covers a mistake or hides the truth. However, lies come in all shapes and forms. When we listen to versions of the truth, faulty doctrine, a jaded synopsis of someone’s character, it is like dipping our toes into a sea of lies. Let them dangle long enough, they’ll be soaked.
Whether it’s coming from our spouse, our boss, the music we listen to, or the shows we watch; what we hear, whether we believe it or not, seeps into our skin. It becomes a part of us and it affects everything we say and every decision we make.
Don’t let someone else’s lie become your truth. Ask God to search your heart and be willing to listen. Let go of the lies that are holding you back and let God’s word lead you into the truth.
Epidemic Island
When I was in the 8th grade, my best friend decided she didn’t want to BFF’s anymore. I was devastated. And it got worse. Not only was she the most popular girl in our grade, she ruled the school. She told a few of our mutual friends that they should dump me as well — by lunch time I might as well have had the plague.
Eventually, my other friends came around. A few even apologized. However, seeds had been planted. I had to work to earn back the trust I did nothing to lose.
We all have our growing up sagas. And hopefully, we all get over them! The point is, whether it is gossip, our opinion, or outright lies, what comes out of our mouth initiates a conversation. What are you initiating?
“Focus your thoughts on things that are true, noble, righteous, pure, lovable, admirable, on some virtue, or on something praise worthy.” (Philippians 4:8)
What we think about, we talk about. You have the opportunity to start an epidemic.
