Have you ever been with some friends and they’re talking about all their favorite shows that they’re currently binging/already finished? And you’re just sitting there like…I didn’t even know another season came out.
I’m not “up to date” with lots of the latest things. New shows, new clothes, new house decor just to name a few. I justify being behind the curve because I have my priorities on other things. To be specific, I’m ok with not being up to date on the new, hit show because I would rather race Hot Wheels into the door with my son!
What I’ve realized in these conversations with my friends, though, is that these shows are being used to benefit their time of rest. Watching TV and movies is how a lot of people choose to unwind, relax, and have “me” time before the next day cycles all over again. To be fair, some people may have more “me” time than others to allocate in different ways.
I’m not one of these people. If you’re a mom like me, there are so many things to do in a given day. Like, almost countless…and they seem to multiply somehow… but that’s for another conversation! There’s food to prepare, work to do, places to go, dishes to clean, laundry to wash, and of course, children to love and guide through this world. By the end of the day when the kids are asleep you finally have your “me” time for the first time all day. So what does that look like for you, and more importantly, what SHOULD that look like for you? Have you set aside any part of your day to grow and nurture your relationship with the Lord?
We give all day long to our kids and ourselves. So why is it so hard for us to give some time to the Lord?
Jesus longs to be our portion, our provider, and our friend! But yes, these things will not be visible to you unless you take the time to receive these truths. Life is full of busyness and burdens — and it’s only our nature to crave distance from them in hopes to feel rest.
King David had these same thoughts. Psalm 55:6-8 says “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would flee far away and stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”
But he doesn’t stop there. He knows that running to the farthest corner of the earth, or in our case, watching the most enchanting topics on TV will never give us the rest we crave.
This is how David suggests we rest: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22).
We will find the ultimate comfort, the ultimate peace, and the ultimate understanding of our days when we learn that our rest comes from The Provider himself. Physical rest follows when our heart’s eyes are locked on Jesus.
Let us take the time to rest and receive His love so that we may be filled and ready to start the next day.
