As a young girl, I dreamt of the days when I’d have children of my own. I absolutely loved it when, at the age of nine, my mom had another baby. My sister and I used to fight over who could hold our baby brother. We even set a timer so we’d both get the same amount of snuggle time! When people used to ask me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My first thought was always, “A mom.”
Fast forward to a few months postpartum, and my dreams of magical motherhood slowly began to fade. I had no idea how physically, mentally, and emotionally draining motherhood could be until after the birth of my first child.
As a new mom, feelings of frustration, fatigue, and overwhelm can make us feel like we’re doing something wrong. Scroll for a few minutes through social media, and it seems like everyone else is enjoying motherhood but us. What are we doing wrong?
Here’s the truth: motherhood is beautiful AND hard. Lovely AND exhausting. If motherhood is more complicated than we thought it would be, that doesn’t mean we’re doing anything wrong.
But we don’t have to stay stuck in our exhaustion. We can learn to find the good parts, even the hard ones. With God’s help, we can see the gifts that God has given us in our children. Instead of meditating on everything going wrong, we can focus on the incredible privilege of raising a child. To help us remember this truth, we must look to God’s Word. That’s why I chose these 10 scriptures to focus on in motherhood.
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety.
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, most gladly, I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed in motherhood, I want you to know you aren’t alone and you don’t have to stay stuck. Ask God to show Himself strong to you! God wants to help you in every season of your life, but you need to lean on Him to see His strength at work.
And remember, there is nothing wrong with reaching out to others and asking for help. Occasional frustration or sadness is normal in motherhood. But if you’re feeling sadness that you can’t shake, experiencing intrusive thoughts or anger all the time, I highly encourage you to talk to your doctor or counselor. Please reach out to someone and share how you’re feeling. There is help available for you.
