Safe, Nontoxic Cleaner for Your Kitchen

A clean home is a key part of fostering a healthy environment for your family. Unfortunately, many popular kitchen cleaners available today are full of chemicals that can irritate delicate skin, trigger allergies, or bother your baby’s lungs.

For example, did you know that while many companies add fragrances to their cleaners, only a few will disclose what they use to make those scents? That means you might not know if your child is allergic or sensitive to the ingredients.

But there is a solution. You can easily make your own DIY natural cleaners!

Using Essential Oils To Clean Your Kitchen

Essential oils are an effective way to get harmful microbes out of your home and kitchen. Two that are excellent for cleaning your kitchen are tea tree and lemon essential oils.

— Tea tree essential oils work well to combat both fungus and bacteria on your kitchen counters.

— Lemon essential oil has antiviral and antiseptic properties. It’s also great for fighting bacteria and cutting through grease, and its scent brings a clean, fresh scent to your home.

You can use vinegar as a safe and effective base for the cleaner. Check out this recipe!

DIY Kitchen Cleaner Recipe by Mama Z

This effective cleaner is easy to make and customize with your favorite essential oil, instead of grapefruit.

Ingredients

— Glass spray bottle

— 10 drops of tea tree essential oil

— 10 drops of lemon essential oil

— 5 drops of grapefruit essential oil

— 3 oz. 91% isopropyl alcohol

— 4 oz. white vinegar

— 1 teaspoon of Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap

— 8 oz. distilled water

Instructions

1. Put the alcohol in the spray bottle and then add the essential oils.

2. Next, slowly add the vinegar.

3. In a separate bowl or bottle, mix the castile soap into the distilled water.

4. Gently add to the alcohol, essential oil, and vinegar mixture. Mix gently, but well.

5. Spray kitchen counters with your homemade cleaner and wipe down.

Important Notes Before Using

— If you have granite countertops, don’t use the vinegar as it can cause etching or pitting. Instead, replace it with distilled water.

— If possible, you should make a fresh batch of cleaner each week if you can but you may be able to get up to a month out of this recipe.

— Check the cleaner each time you use it for bacterial and fungal and discard if necessary.

— Store in a cold place if possible.

This recipe allows you to control everything that’s in your cleaner, providing an easy step to a nontoxic home. Because you are only using a few drops of oil at a time, this is also an affordable solution that you can replenish as needed.
