When our daughters were preschoolers, we often sang a blessing over our dinner:
God we thank You. God we thank You. For our food. For our food. And our many blessings. And our many blessings. Amen. Amen.
If you know that song, you probably just sang those words in your head instead of reading them. That prayer—that song—sticks with you long after your children grow up. That’s the thing about prayers. They make a lasting impression and points your family towards God.
Scripture provides an ample supply of words to pray over your home. Pick one below and speak these prayers over your home. Or choose your own verse and write one yourself.
“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.
“Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives.”
Prayer:
Lord, I ask that you help every person who steps within these four walls to be clothed in compassion, kindness, humility, and quiet strength. Lead us to be quicker to show love and forgiveness than we are to lose our temper or to say hurtful words. Blanket our thoughts and our actions with the peace of Christ. Help us to express empathy and work together to glorify You. To You, Lord, we express our gratitude from morning until night.
2. Joshua 24:15 NIV
“As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Prayer:
Lord, we choose You. A thousand times over we choose You. We submit our lives to Your will and commit to faithfully serve You. Father, I ask that our neighbors recognize us as Your followers in such a way that You are glorified. Lord, I claim it again: We choose to serve You.
3. Proverbs 22:6 NIV
“Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Prayer:
Father, give me patience. Remind me to focus on the long-range goal of raising humans who know, love, and follow You. Help me not to become distracted by the things that won’t matter in 5 years (like a messy room) or discouraged by the hard days or seasons of parenting. Thank You for being the perfect example of a parent. I dedicate my child(ren) to You.
4. Numbers 6:24-26 NIV
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Prayer:
Lord, please turn Your face upon me and my family. Open our hearts and minds to abundantly receive Your peace so our home becomes a soft place to land, a place where everyone feels welcomed and loved with open arms. Bless and protect us each time we step outside of our home and let Your peace be so evident in our lives that others are drawn to You.
5. Psalm 4:8 NIV
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
Prayer:
Lord, when my family rests under the shadow of your wings, I know we are safe. I ask that you remind us each night that we can rest in peace. And on those nights when worry or stress or sickness keeps us up, please help us to feel Your presence and receive the peace You freely give those who seek You.
6. Matthew 7:24 NLT
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.”
Prayer:
Father, I want to build this house on the solid ground of your Word. I want my children to seek You and following Your ways. I need your help, Lord. I know I can’t do this without You. On the days I make excuses or find reasons not to spend time in Your word or in prayer, gently nudge me closer to You. Open my ears to hear what You want to teach me and open my eyes to see the path that you put before me. I pray that for my entire family, Lord.
7. Isaiah 32:18 NIV
“My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.”
Prayer:
I claim the truth of this verse over my home. Because we are Yours, our home is peaceful. Because we are Yours, our home is secure. Because we are Yours, our home is a place of rest. Lord, thank you for your provision. Thank You for Your peace. And, Father, thank You for Your gift of rest.
8. Proverbs 14:1 NIV
“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to make wise choices with my words and actions so that I build up my family, not tear them down. Give me patience and a calm mind to respond in love not anger. Give me the tools and wisdom to discipline and disciple my children so that they grow to know and love you even more. Strengthen my relationship with my spouse so our marriage models for our children a healthy God-centered marriage.
