The foundation of Christianity is faith. You have faith that Jesus not only is the Son of God but also can atone for all your sins. From the first moment you begin walking with Jesus until you go to your eternal home, faith and trust are an integral part of your Christian walk.
Believing in Jesus is the first step that sets you on the path toward eternity in Heaven. But what about the moments in between? Life is always challenging, and it goes according to plan. Walking with Jesus requires you to have faith and trust in God’s promises. Let’s explore five promises from God and how trusting in them will directly impact your personal and spiritual growth.
God is not a genie, and while He does promise that He will answer all your prayers, growing and maturing in your faith requires understanding that He is not here to give you everything you want. God’s purpose and plan for your life was completed on the cross—He saved you—but you are not meant to stay where you started.
According to Molly Howard from GCU, “Spiritual growth involves learning more about and leaning into God.” Molly goes on to state that this can be reflected in our actions. Your spiritual life is meant to change and grow, and you are meant to become more like Jesus.
Believing in God’s promises and experiencing spiritual growth requires action. You are now on the journey of trusting God, no matter what is happening around you.
Here are God’s promises that will catapult your faith if you choose to lean in and trust!
“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, WEB).
Almost twelve months ago, I was laid off from my job. When I heard the news, my first instinct was to dive headfirst into finding another job. I applied for jobs, but nothing worked, and I felt helpless.
“Therefore, don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:31-33, WEB).
It was during this season in my life that I realized I needed to have faith no matter what I did.
Whether I was looking for another job or pursuing my writing, I had to have faith because there was very little I could control when it came to what doors would open for me. I had to trust in God’s provision, and this has helped me grow in my faith that God will supply all my needs.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, WEB).
I have three adult children, and nothing has made me surrender and trust God more than letting go and watching them go out into the world.
If I could give moms one piece of advice, it would be to always trust in God’s promises for your children and your family. You are raising human beings who need to:
We all need God’s help and wisdom during the parenting process.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5, WEB).
When I start worrying about my children, I quickly return to God’s promises. In the book Doing Life with Your Adult Children Keep Your Mouth Shut and the Welcome Mat Out, the author shares a simple prayer for parents that is based on the Promises of God and it is, “Father, I surrender my children to Your loving care and Your tender mercies.”
Parenting is about leaning into God’s promise of mercy and grace over your children. You lead by example by walking out of your faith. Your spiritual growth will give you the tools and the wisdom you need to “train them up in the way they should go.”
“What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Mark 10:9, WEB).
We all want the fairytale wedding and the happily ever after. But marriage is hard, and there will be moments when you will want to give up. However, there are growth and blessings that come from remaining committed to your marriage.
“If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12, WEB).
Inviting God into your life and relationship with your spouse will create a marriage that is not easily broken.
“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, WEB).
Prayer is an opportunity to share your heart with God. The promise from God is that when you pray, the peace that surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and your thoughts. “With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:2-3, WEB).
Peace in your life will be the root of unity in all your relationships. This peace will protect your words and your actions towards others.
“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isaiah 41:10, WEB).
Finally, the greatest promise that will change your life and help you to grow spirituality is knowing that you are not alone. God is always with you, even in the trials. He is not the enemy of your faith, and He is not the source of all your problems. Instead, God is the source of peace, grace, mercy, and strength to endure what no one could endure on their own.
Knowing and focusing on God’s promises will change your perspective on this life and whatever you are facing at this moment. You will see this life through an entirely new lens, and you will be changed forever.
