According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, faith has many specific definitions. One definition is a “firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” A distinction for us as Christians is that the Bible itself is proof. Faith is the belief in the yet unseen.
In other words, faith is the confidence or trust that we hold in God and His promises to us as His children. Faith grows as we spend time in God’s Word.
The following are five beautiful verses that may help spur your faith.
Isaiah 46:4 (NIV): “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you, and I will rescue you.”
We spend much of our youth ingrained in the idea that when we become adults, we must be “independent” and on our own. Yet upon becoming an adult, it almost feels like we are suddenly swimming in the ocean without arm floaties, desperate to keep our faces above the water.
Isn’t it lovely that God does not view His children that way? Even in our old age, He will provide for, carry, and even rescue us!
Matthew 6:25-27 (NIV): “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
Not being anxious or worrying is easier said than done, and God knows that. This is why He tells us several times in the scriptures how valuable we are to Him. In this passage, He compares us to birds, giving beautiful imagery as to why we do not need to worry about our needs being met. God knows our needs, and one way or another, He provides for the necessities.
Joshua 1:9 (NIV): “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
God will be with me wherever I go. There is nothing I find more beautiful and reassuring than this message. There is nothing to fear because there is nothing bigger or more powerful than the Lord our God!
Micah 6:8 (NIV): “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
We have a relationship with God. Relationships are two-way streets. The passage above from the Book of Micah is a beautiful reminder of our relationship status.
He has shown us what is good. We know God is there to protect us, but we must do our part. Walking humbly with God, loving others, and showing mercy, as He has shown us, is beautiful when seen in action.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV): “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
This scripture hit me especially hard this week. My mother has struggled most of my adult life with health problems, some of which have been complicated. She had a health emergency a few weeks ago that led to treatment in an emergency department and two weeks on life support before the doctors determined that there was nothing more they could do.
I struggled to accept the prognosis and struggled even more to allow the ventilator support to be turned off. She was in hospice for a short twenty-six hours. Her family was there for her until she took her last breath. I have never felt so helpless.
She fought the good fight till the very end. The comfort I have now is knowing she has her crown. She is with Jesus and my father, whom she has long missed.
Thinking of her being with Jesus, without any more pain, and reuniting with my dad made this verse all the more beautiful and special to me this week.
My faith assures me that I will be with my Lord and Savior in Heaven one day. I believe in this promise from the Bible. This faith grants me peace in knowing that at that time, I will also get to see my parents once again.
Remember, friend, the definition of faith and look for its clarification in the scriptures. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NIV) reminds us that “our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
